Ireland - Donegal to Derry

According to tradition Saint Colm Cille chose the oak grove on top of this hill to build his monastery in 546AD. A settlement grew up around it. All of Derry's names over the centuries refer back to the Irish 'Daire' or 'Doire' which means 'the oak grove'. The charter from James I in 1604 referred to the city and county of 'Derrie', now Derry.
